NHL Headlines:

Cory Schneider continues to provide that steady prescence in net behind Luongo as he now moves to 13-5-0 on the year with his most recent win being against the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night. Schneider stopped 26 of 28 for the 5-2 win to help the Canucks build on their recent streak of stringing together four straight wins.

“For me, it’s all about wins,” said Schneider, who is 11-1 dating back to Nov. 20, with a .928 save percentage through his first 21 games.

“The other numbers are nice but it’s not what I’m too worried about,” he continued. “As a guy who doesn’t play too often, I want to win. I want to come in there and help my team out. I don’t want to be the guy who throws us off the track.

“It would be tough not to be playing much if I was losing all the time.”

Schneider, 25, is on the final year of a $900,000 contract. As a restricted free agent entitled to a salary increase, it will lead to some interesting off-season decisions, given that Luongo’s 12-year, $64-million, no-trade deal doesn’t expire until 2021-22.

“My role on this team this year is what it is. All I can do is control the opportunities I do get. I can’t worry about the ones I’m not getting. If we were losing a lot or it seemed a lot more unfair than it is, then maybe it would be a little frustrating, but Roberto has been one of the best goalies in hockey over the last three months so, for me, it’s fun to watch him and watch the team win.” For more on this article Click Here.

The previous night the Canucks went up against the 8th place Toronto Maple Leafs with Luongo in between the pipes. The Canucks starting netminder stopped 24 of 26 to help the team to another 6-2 blowout win.

CIS Updates:

The No. 4 ranked Manitoba Bisons men’s hockey team clinches Canada West first place in conference regular season standings for the first time since the 1970-71 season. The Bisons won 5-4 (OT) over the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday, February 18 at the Max Bell Arena to secure the first spot in the conference in over 40 years.

Manitoba finishes 2011-12 conference regular season with a 20-5-3 record for 43 points. The Herd stayed ahead of Alberta and Saskatchewan in a tight battle for first place that went down to the last game of the regular season.

With clinching first place, the Bisons now earn a playoff bye as they will await the winners of the two 2012 Canada West Quarter Final series on Feb. 24-26 weekend. In addition, Manitoba will have home ice advantage for the remainder of the 2012 playoffs as the best-of-three series are all played at the home of the highest seed.

Bison netminder Joe Caligiuri was in net for the two victories over the weekend as he stopped 26 of 27 on Friday and 15 of 19 on Saturday night in a close overtime battle.

In the WHL:

Friday Luke Siemens shutdown the Medicine Hat Tigers as he closed the door on all 22 shots he faced. This was Siemens’ 29th win of the season and 4th shutout of the year.

Damien Ketlo came up with another victory over his old team as he helped the Hurricanes grab a 6-4 win. Rather than seeing his 40 plus shots per game, this time Ketlo only had to move aside 24 of 28 to get the W for his team. After a tough loss to Lethbridge on Friday night, Matt Hewitt rebounded with a big 4-2 win over the Kootney Ice.

Mac Engel grabbed a 3-0 shutout over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Sunday night as he stopped all 18 shots he faced. This adds to his 24 wins.

In the MJHL:

The GDI Prairies Goalie of the Month has done it again. On Saturday he grabbed another victory for Dauphin as he pushed aside 27 of 28 shots for a 6-1 win against OCN. Dawson Guhle has settled his way into the league with an outstanding record of 22-6-0. No wonder Dauphin has found their way to holding first place in the league. The Kings picked up back-to-back wins against OCN as they grabbed a 6-4 win also on Friday night.

In the SJHL:

Estevan Bruins goaltender Tyler Ross found his way to a 6-3 win over the Weyburn Red Wings as he stopped 29 of 32 shots on the night. The rookie goaltender grabbed his 6th win under his play in the SJHL. As a right handed catcher, Ross has been provided the tools to be a great goaltender from the tutelage of goaltending coach Ted Ryplanski.

The Winnipeg Thrashers go head-to-head against the Pembina Valley Hawks, Central Plains Capitals meet the Winnipeg Wild, and the Brandon Wheat Kings faceoff against the Interlake Lightning. The Norman Northstars and Southwest Cougars hit the ice on Friday night for their first game.

This past Saturday goaltender Zac Robidoux was able to capture the series against the Parkland Rangers as he picked up his second win of the playoffs with a 5-1 tally. Over the first round Robidoux accumulated a total of 35 stops and allowed only two goals against.

Playing against last years Bantam 2 AAA Champions that Winnipeg Hawks Dola came into their barn and pushed aside 36 of 37 shots to help the Interlake Lightning take the 2-1 win. In the teams first round matchup of the playoffs Interlake may be predicted to play the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Two rounds in the books, two more rounds to go for the Westman High School Hockey League’s Neepawa Tigers. The Tigers swept away Virden in a best-of-three A-side second round series this past week, outscoring the Golden Bears 16-3 in two games (9-1, 7-2).

“The Virden series went pretty well for us,” said Tigers’ head coach Mike Adams. “We started a little slow in both games, but got better every period.”

With the series win, the Tigers have advanced to the third round where they’ll meet the Major Pratt Trojans (Russell) in another best-of-three affair. The Trojans finished the regular season third overall in the league, seven points back of second-place Neepawa. ”One of the things we have stressed this year is to play our game regardless of who the opponent is,” he said.

Adams says the coaching staff will continue with their “wait and see approach” when it comes to who gets the nod in net each game. Brady Plett and Grant Graham have shared the duties this year and wound up winning the top goalie award in the WHSHL, allowing only 35 goals in 18 games. Adams says the goalie rotation may continue for the foreseeable future.

“Our goaltending has been very good this year. I don’t know if we will continue to rotate all the way through the playoffs. Brady (Plett) has played well and is getting some great experience, while Grant (Graham) has been through these playoffs before and is two years older, so that may factor in later on in the postseason.

“They both need to prepare for every game and earn their starts,” he continued.

As the playoffs continue, Adams says playing a complete 60 minutes and not having any lapses during games will be key going forward.

“With the slow starts we’ve been having, our goalies (Brady Plett, Grant Graham) have been there to bail us out until we get our legs going,” he said. “That’s something we are trying to change and we will continue to focus on every game.”

Game 1 of the series is scheduled for Wednesday night in Neepawa at the Yellowhead Centre. Game time is 7:15 p.m. Game 2 meanwhile, will be played in Waywayseecappo on Saturday due to a set-back in the new Russell arena project. The $8-million multiplex was supposed to open in August 2011 but construction problems have kept the doors closed.

Game time for Saturday’s tilt is set for 7:30 p.m. Game 3 (if necessary) will be played in Neepawa on Sunday. For more on the article that was posted on myWestman.ca Click Here.

The GDI trained netminder Brady Plett was drafted to the Neepawa Natives in the 2011 MJHL Draft.

This was Hewitt’s 4th Shutout of the year for the second year Regina Pat goaltender. After struggling to start the month of February off strong he has turned things around the past two games to stop 44 of 45 shots.

GDI would like to wish Matt the best as he heads into the end of the regular season leading up towards playoffs.

CJS Olympiens escape with shootout victory

Throughout the year GDI Prairies has provided consulting to the CJS goaltenders, Erik Pion and Sam Lavergne, helping both goalies get set for the march into this years playoffs. Recently goaltender Erik Pion found success in his last season game as he was able to help his team grab some momentum before playoffs and capture a shootout victory.

Sometimes taking the two points and running is the best thing to do.

Thanks to some great goaltending, (and a little bit of luck), the College Jeanne Sauve Olympiens did just that, escaping with a 3-2 shootout win over the Vincent Massey Vikings in an “A” division matchup on Friday night.

During three-on-three overtime, the Vikings managed to get three breakaways but failed to score on all of them, with two hitting the post and one being stopped by goaltender Erik Pion, who was phenomenal all night.

The Olympiens also needed late-game heroics just to get to overtime as a loose puck appeared to be hammered in by Jeremy Gladish with just 2:16 remaining.

But as they say, a win is a win.

“I’m gonna have to chew my defence out,” said Olympiens head coach Matt Gagne of the trio of overtime breakaways.

Coming off a 6-5 win over second-ranked Oak Park on Tuesday, the Olympiens were slow out of the gate and Pion had to be sharp early to keep the game scoreless after one.

The Olympiens opened the scoring at 5:08 of the second period on a Kallan Kastes slapper but the Vikings came back with two goals to take a 2-1 leading heading into the third.

CJS came out flying in the third period and were all over the Vikings for most of the 20-minute frame until the late goal finally went in.

“We worked so hard to get that last goal,” said Gagne.

Then Pion took over in overtime and shootout, making a number of stops including a nifty poke check during the shootout. “I was definitely happy to hear the post a couple of times,” said Pion. “But this win gives us lots of momentum and confidence heading into the playoffs.”

The game was the final one of the regular season for both teams with CJS finishing fourth and Vincent Massey finishing fifth in the division.

NHL Headlines:

Saturday night for the Winnipeg Jets was like a fly caught in a spider web failing to get free. Taking an early two goal lead on the road is tough to achieve, but an even tougher task is trying to keep it. The common saying is that two goal leads are the most deceiving, and for the Jets this was just the case. After falling from 2-0 to 4-2 they attempted to climb, fall, climb, trip and fall some more. The final score ended at 8-5 for Pittsburgh as GDI trained Marc-Andre Fleury grabbed the win for the Penguins and Ondrej Pavelec suffered the tough loss.

Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury gave up goals on five of 25 shots but still beat the Winnipeg franchise for the eighth straight time in Pittsburgh. Fleury is 12-2 overall against the Jets, who relocated from Atlanta after last season. The 2009 Stanley Cup Champion and 2010 Winter Olympics Gold Medalist spent his two Team Canada World Junior experiences teamed up with Ian Clark (GDI Founder). Clark was Team Canada’s Goaltending Consultant for four years garnering two gold medals and two silver medals during this stretch.

Columbus Blue Jackets Goaltender Steve Mason picked up the games 1st Star against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night. Mason stopped 34 of 35 shots. After closing out the first period at 1-1 the Blue Jackets shut the door against the Wild as they threw two pucks past goalie Niklas Backstrom to grab an away victory at the Xcel Energy Center.

College Column:

The Niagara University Purple Eagles played Robert Morris to a 2-2 draw on Sunday. GDI trained goaltender Abby Ryplanski made 27 saves for a 5-7-3 record on the year.

“I was happy with our effort tonight,” head coach Josh Sciba said. “I thought Abby [Ryplanski] played well and Jenna Hendrkx had a good game. Kelsey Welch played very well for us tonight. I think there are a lot of girls that are doing some good things.” The Purple Eagles have a week off before completing the regular season portion of their schedule in a weekend series against the Syracuse Orange. The first game is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 24 and concludes the following day.

CIS Updates:

For the third time this year, Joe Caligirui was a brick wall against the University of Calgary Dinos as the University of Manitoba Bisons picked up a thrilling 1-0 shootout victory on Saturday, February 11th. Manitoba retained first place in the standings with the Saskatchewan Huskies (third place and two points back) and Alberta Golden Bears (second spot and one point back of Manitoba) breathing down their necks. As the Dinos were unable to solve Caligirui, he picked up his third shutout of the year. Stopping all 4 of Calgary’s power play chances and all 25 shots against we can only conclude that Joe had one heck of a perfect game.

In the WHL:

Taking the month of Januarys 2nd Star is longtime GDI goaltender Alex Moodie. Starting off we can say that Christmas was more then just a couple days for Mr. Moodie. On Boxing Day he took the trek to Saskatoon to join the Blades as Andrey Makarov was with Team Russia in the World Junior Championships.

To a surprise, he ended up staying for with the team for close to a month. In the month of January he recorded a 8-2 record with the team, which included one shutout against the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Playing with the Winnipeg Wild for the season Moodie has been a big part of the teams outstanding record as they have dominated with a 41-2-1 record.

The second place Moose Jaw Warriors have clinched a playoff spot and on Friday night Luke Siemens grabbed another victory for the team as the Warriors took down the Hitmen by a score of 4-2.

Goaltender Nathan Lieuwen grabbed two wins over the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday and then capturing a 4-0 shutout against the Calgary Hitmen on Sunday.

Other heroics across the league included Laurent Brossoit shutting out the Prince George Cougars 5-0. With the 24 save performance win the Edmonton Oil Kings move to 37 wins and 81 points, 3 points back of the leagues top team the Kamloops Blazers.

In the MJHL:

First off, capturing the month Januarys 1st Star is the Dauphin Kings netminder Dawson Guhle. Guhle sits in 6th in goaltender statistics for his efforts throughout the season. With his strong play he has helped the Kings climb their way to a successful season as they lead the league with 81 points. In 26 games played Guhle has a record of 20-6-0, a save percentage of .911 and a GAA of 2.84.

For the 3rd straight year the Addison Division rivals – the Winnipeg Saints and the Selkirk Steelers – met up at the MTS Centre for the Red River Showdown. With the Steelers winning in 2010 and the Saints taking the game last year, this was the rubber match. Patrick D’Amico scored his 13th of the season midway through the first period and the Saints never looked back. Goaltender Addison Herosian helped backstop the Saints with 26 saves as they defeated the Selkirk Steelers 4-1 to win the Red River Showdown at the MTS Centre on Wednesday.

Over the weekend the Saints had a stint of 3 home games back-to-back as they took on the Blues, Wayway, and Selkirk. The team was able to split the three games and gain 3 of a possible 6 points as they lost in overtime to Wayway 3-2 and took down the Steelers again with a 4-2 win.

The league has also drawn attention to the strong play of two goaltenders as the MJHL Award Nominations were announced recently. Nominated for the league MVP Steve “Boomer” Hawrysh Award was Matt Krahn (OCN Blizzard) for the second year and Swan Valley Stampeders Jarson Argue.

Up for the leagues Top Goaltender is the Selkirk Steelers Adam Harris, Swan Valley’s Jayson Argue and OCN’s Matt Krahn. For more on the MJHL Award nominations Click Here.

Dezzy grabbed the games 1st star award as he moves his record on the year to .500 as the Bombers battle to catch up to La Ronge in the standings. Almost unheard of, all four games on Sunday night were shutouts. Brendan Fiebelkorn (Winnipeg Thrashers), Alex Moodie (Winnipeg Wild), Derek Davies (Interlake Lightning), and Zac Robidoux (Pembina Valley Hawks) all grabbed perfect games. All four GDI goaltenders sit in the top 10 of league leader of goaltender statistics, not to mention that 9 out of 10 goaltenders have trained with GDI Prairies through the past 2-3 years.

Picking up the top spot on the leader board is Gage Murray. Gage has been sensational this year as he has found a way to get behind pucks and steal wins against some of the leagues top teams. With a 17-2-1 record, 5 shutouts, 1.42 GAA and a .920 Save Percentage it is well deserved! Keep it up Gage as we wish you all the best as you head into playoffs and then to the Western Regionals – Telus Cup Qualifier.

Inching their way closer they headed to Thunder Bay over the weekend.

Out of the 3 games they played Gagliardi and Brown were able to each grab a win to take 4 of 6 points. With the two victories the team moves towards playoffs on a high note as they are set to ride the momentum of their winning ways.

GDI Prairies would like to congratulate the AA Minor Bantam Canadians as they were able to capture a bronze medal their tournament over the weekend. In net in the final game was GDI trained netminder Braden Howard. Congrats Howie! Great Work, keep it going into playoffs!

As the end of the year approaches award nominations are brought up and yet again GDI Goaltenders have found their way into the mix. Diving heads first into the nominees we will first look at the GDI 3 Stars for the month of January as seen above in the video.

Next up we look to visit the MJHL.

Both Saints goaltenders, league veteran Addison Herosian and first year netminder Teagan Sacher, have been training with GDI Prairies for the past three years.

Currently the team looks to catch the Selkirk Steelers in the standings as they fight for 4th place with 3 games in hand.

Stemming from this match-up this leads into the MJHL Awards as they were announced days after the Red River Showdown. Nominees for the MJHL’s six major awards were finalized and the respective winners will be announced later this month.

CIS:

With a 17-5-2 record the Bisons have now moved into first place with 36 points within the Canada West Conference. This past Friday kicked of the start of two games against UBC. Game one finished in a shootout with the Bisons taking the 3-2 victory. Goaltender Joe Caligiuri made 30 saves on the evening. In game two the match-up was just as close, and took the Bisons by surprise as they found themselves down early. In this game netminder Joe Caligiuri made 14 saves in the first two periods, and Mark Friesen made seven in the third for the win. The Bisons went into the 3rd period being down 3-1 for this game and found a way to make a comeback as they scored four straight goals in the third to take the 5-3 win.

Next up the Bisons are away for the weekend in Calgary before they return home for their last two season games against UBC.

In the WHL:

First year netminder for the Regina Pats Adam Beukeboom picked up his first WHL career shutout on Friday night. Beuke’s grabbed the games 2nd star award as he stopped 27 shots on the night. With the victory Beukeboom went on to start the teams next game Saturday night as they played Lethbridge. In this game the momentum seemed to stay on the Pats side, but unfortunately they couldn’t beat their old netminder Damien Ketlo. As 20 year old goaltender was traded to the Hurricanes at the start of the year he must have looked for this game on the schedule as he was on his game all night. Stopping 45 of 47 shots Ketlo 45 of 47 shots he was awarded the games first star as he helped his new team to a 3-2 victory.

In other action on Friday, CHL Prospect Goaltender Chris Dreidger went up against last years WHL Championship goaltender Nathan Lieuwen in a low scoring affair. The ice seemed to have the momentum on their side in the first period as they had a 1-0 lead, but quickly the tides changed as Calgary picked up their socks and went to work. In the remaining two period Lieuwen was peppered and only faltered once as he helped the Ice to a 2-1 win. Continuing into Saturday, Lieuwen helped the Ice freeze the Chiefs as they captured a 4-2 victory at home.

The Western Hockey League announced on Friday that Chris Driedger, of the Calgary Hitmen, has been named the WHL Goaltender of the Month for January. The 17-year-old top NHL prospect posted a 6-0 record through January with two shut-outs. Driedger’s 1.29 goals-against average and 0.954 save percentage led all WHL goaltenders in January, allowing just eight goals on 173 shots-against in 371 minutes played. His efforts also earned him 1st Star selection three times through the month.

Driedger’s consistent play helped the Hitmen to a 13-1-0-0 record in January and now found themselves in third spot in the WHL Eastern Conference standings with a 31-17-2-1 record for 65 points.

Spencer Tremblay appeared in his 15th game of the year with the Warriors on Saturday as they went up against the Prince Albert Raiders. As the Florida Panthers 1st rounder Quinton Howden went to work stealing the show with a hat-trick and racking up 4 points on the night, his Manitoba teammate in net was able to have a sound night for himself as he stopped 28 of 30 to pick up the 7-2 win. Currently Moose Jaw sits 2nd, 4 points back of Edmonton in the Eastern Conference.

In the MJHL:

Goaltender Teagan Sacher grabbed his second win in a row as he took down Winkler on Wednesday and then Portage on Saturday in a Shootout.

The Saints return to action on Wednesday February 8th at the MTS Centre. This is the third annual Red River Showdown, as the two clubs were tied at 2 going into the third period during last year’s game before the Saints exploded for 5 third period goals. The Saints won 7-2.

The Saints are currently 26-20-5 after defeating the Terriers in Portage on Saturday.

In the SJHL:

Myles Hovdebo continues to be on a tare as he turned aside all 22 shots he faced on Wednesday, as the La Ronge Ice Wolves blanked the Melfort Mustangs 2-0. The Ice Wolves (28-17-0-5) are in a great battle for third place in the Bauer, and close the gap to one point back of Nipawin, who currently holds down third spot. Both teams have 8 games to play.

In the MBAAA:

The Winnipeg Thrashers grabbed three wins in four days as they were able to take down Kenora, Southwest, and Brandon. Goaltenders Shaun Gerbinski and Brendan Fiebelkorn both picked up shutouts over the weekend.

On Friday night the Thrashers went up against the Southwest Cougars in a battle for the ages. Both teams were finalists in the league last year and match-up as being strategic and both well groomed teams. In this games both GDI goaltenders, Brendan Fiebelkorn (Thrashers) and Brian Archibald (Cougars), were caught in a game where they had to be on their toes. As the game entered the 3rd with Southwest having the 4-2 lead the Thrashers found a way to turn the game around and make it 5-4 and take the victory. This was the Thrashers first win against their rival all year.

The Southwest Cougars are holding this years Western Regional Championships in Virden.

In the MJHL – Teagan Sacher pushed out 43 of 44 shots to capture a 4-1 victory for the Saints over the Winkler Flyers. Many of their match-ups together have been close fought games, besides this one where Sacher was able to hold off the Flyers attack and calm the storm to allow his team to pick up two points. In the two games that Sacher has faced against Winkler he has seen a total of 77 shots against and has allowed a low 4 goals to get past him.

In the MBAAA – Both Shaun Gerbinski of the Winnipeg Thrashers and Ty Edmonds of the Winnipeg Wild picked up shutout wins for their teams. Gerbinski takes his league leading 6th shutout of the year and Edmonds grabs his 4th of the year.
